Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How did you arrive at this list?

Our meticulous process involved reviewing over 800 companies. We created a shortlist of 222, including past listees (2019, 2021, 2022, 2023), nominated companies, and expert recommendations. The expert committee then voted on these candidates. The final 2024 list is a reflection of the collective judgment and consensus of our expert panel.

Q2. Is the list a ranking?

No, the list is not ranked. The companies are presented alphabetically. We intentionally avoided rankings to equally recognize the top 100 geospatial companies without implying a hierarchy.

Q3. Who was part of the expert committee?

The 2024 expert committee, a distinguished group of experts, brought together a diverse range of expertise and insights to curate the Global Top 100 Geo list. This year’s committee included:

  • Sives Govender, Research Group Leader, CSIR, South Africa and Co- founder and coordinator of Environmental Information System-Africa

  • Justyna Redelkiewicz, Head of Section Entrepreneurship and Environment at the European Union Agency for Space Programme (EUSPA)
  • Wilfred Waters, Geospatial Consultant

and

Q4. What information was available to the expert committee to make this call?

Geoawesomeness announced an open call for nominations for the 2024 list on October 16th, 2022 and companies were requested to voluntarily provide insights. Companies provided comprehensive responses to the questions, which the committee used to gain a deeper understanding of each company’s vision, operations, and impact. The committee members relied on their extensive industry knowledge and unique perspectives to make informed decisions.

Q5. What were the criteria?

No official criteria were provided to the expert committee to base their decisions. Each expert made a call based on their unique perspective. We fully stand by their decision and don’t feel it’s necessary to restrict them with quantitive or qualitative criterion that might restrict them in any way whatsoever.

Q6. My company deserves to be on the list! What I can do to convince you?

We understand the passion. Its tough for our team to leave out companies that we believe are doing amazing work but top 100 means that we only have 100 slots so its possible that we have left out many companies that are equally deserving. The best thing you can do right now is to ensure that you nominate your company to the 2025 list once nominations are announced. Nominations and the information companies share with us go a long way in helping our experts understand your company better than any website in the world.

Do send us an email at info@geoawesomeness.com and subscribe to our newletter to ensure that you are informed when the nominations are announced.

Q7. I have feedback/further questions regarding the list, whom do I approach?

We are eager to hear your opinions and constructive criticism. You can email us at info@geoawesomeness.com. Aleks, Muthu or another member of the team will usually get back to you within 1-3 business days.

Share Your Insights: Geoawesomeness is Looking for Contributing Writers

Geoawesomeness is looking for new volunteer contributors to join our team! We’re not looking for professional writers, we’re looking for people. Geoawesomeness is a community platform and media organization focused on location technology and everything awesome about it. We are building an open community that everybody is able to join, contribute towards and feel heard.

That’s why our team is looking for people with unique voices and perspectives. We’re not interested in perfect prose, great grammar or spelling. We want to hear what you have to say.

Our ethos revolves around creating a community that both reads stories by and writes for the community. Whether it’s your take on open geospatial data, what you’ve learned from working in geospatial organizations, or where the evolution of earth observation technologies is taking us—we want to hear it. Tell us about the biggest challenges you’ve faced in the industry, the needs you’d consider important and the thoughts you’ve had about a topic you care about. Geoawesomeness is all about sparking discussions and creating conversations that matter.

In 2024, we’re dedicating each month to a specific theme, but are open to articles beyond these areas too:

  • January: Bringing space data down to earth
  • February: The importance of real-time geospatial data
  • March: Sustainable agriculture using geospatial intelligence
  • April: Trends and developments in the industry
  • May Geospatial support for humanitarian aid
  • June: The emergence of 3D geospatial data visualization and augmented reality (AR)
  • July: Marine geospatial data and ocean conservation
  • August: Drones and other UAVs in geospatial data collection
  • September: Expanding lidar capabilities and uses
  • October: The revolution of BIM technology and the use of digital twins
  • November: Geospatial for climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • December: Looking back at 2024 and ahead to 2025

Don’t worry if you’ve got an article idea or draft that falls outside of these months or themes – we’re open to all ideas and can publish your article at any point. As a contributor, you’ll be supported by our editorial team every step of the way and have the freedom to pitch topics, spotlight changemakers and express your voice.

No matter your background, writing skills or geospatial experience, we encourage and welcome you to bring your viewpoint to the table. At Geoawesomeness, we are united by our belief in the power of location technology to transform the world for the better.

If you or someone you know is interested in writing, please email info@geoawesomeness.com with the subject line: Geoawesomeness Contributor and the following details:

  • 3-5 lines about yourself and your connection to the geospatial and EO community
  • The topic(s) you’d like to write about and why
  • Either an article pitch or if already written, a draft article of 500-1000 words

Looking forward to receiving your ideas and insights for all things geospatial in 2024!
