For those who dream of advancing our space in the Universe and on Earth, we’ll take you there.

MDA is an international space mission partner and robotics & space operations, satellite systems and Geointelligence pioneer with a 50-year story of firsts on and above the Earth. Today, we're leading the charge towards viable Moon colonies, enhanced Earth observation, communication in a hyper-connected world, and more.

We’re fueled by a pioneering spirit that carries us beyond. And together we enable highly skilled people to continually push boundaries and tackle big challenges requiring solutions that endure and inspire.

Building the space between proven and possible, MDA Space (TSX:MDA) is a trusted mission partner to the global space industry. A robotics, satellite systems and Geointelligence pioneer with a 55-year+ story of world firsts and more than 450 missions, MDA Space is a global leader in communications satellites, Earth and space observation, and space exploration and infrastructure. The MDA Space team of more than 3,000 space experts in Canada, the US and the UK has the knowledge and know-how to turn an audacious customer vision into an achievable mission – bringing to bear a one-of-a-kind mix of experience, engineering excellence and wide-eyed wonder that’s been in our DNA since day one. For those who dream big and push boundaries on the ground and in the stars to change the world for the better, we’ll take you there.

For more than four decades, human spaceflight has been supported by advanced robotics developed by MDA. We have combined complex robotics with control software to develop mission critical robotic arms for the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station (ISS). Today, MDA is developing sophisticated systems for new projects such as an artificial intelligence-enabled robotic system to assemble and maintain a lunar staging outpost orbiting the moon (Gateway) enabling future exploration missions, human lunar landings, missions to explore Mars and on-orbit servicing of satellites.

MDA (USA) has no set limit on vacation (Flexible Time Off) offered from day one of employment and a hybrid work schedule (3 days on site and 2 days at home), allowing both flexibility for work\life balance and the benefits of in person communication.

Are you ready to launch the next stage of your career in the new space economy? We would love to hear from you!

The Position

We’re on the hunt for a Mission Systems Engineer on our Robotics & Space Operations team at our Houston, TX office. As a Mission Systems Engineer you will support on-going robotic operations on the International Space Station (ISS), providing real-time engineering flight support. You will also support the development of the Lunar Gateway External Robotics System (GERS). Part of the Artemis program, GERS is the robotic arm being developed for the space station that will orbit the moon. Both roles require you to become knowledgeable on the details of how each robotic system functions. Primarily, this position involves integrating with many players to ensure things go well. Representing robotics, you will coordinate with technical representatives of each system on ISS (structures, data, power, thermal, etc.), multiple international and commercial partners, and different elements of NASA (program, engineering, operations). This is a diverse role that will have you working with key stakeholders - while participating in a number of ISS & Lunar Gateway forums, panels, working groups and boards onsite at NASA's Johnson Space Center.

Duties Include

  • ISS robotics Flight system following, tracking and performance monitoring at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) Mission Evaluation Room (MER) [of “Houston, we have a problem” fame]
  • Preparing ISS robotics engineering shift reports during mission operations
  • Supporting development of ISS robotics operations products
  • Supporting post mission and system trending analysis
  • Integrate with other MER console team members in support of ISS robotic on-orbit operations and anomaly investigations
  • Provide engineering support for simulations in preparation for ISS flight and planned specialized ISS robotic operations
  • Support ISS MER process/operations improvement activities
  • Assisting in defining:
  • Gateway logistics for delivery, installation, and inspection of external science payloads and orbital replacement units
  • Integrated verification, assembly, and testing activities
  • Robotics maintenance services to Gateway including inspection of modules, component removal and replacement, Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA, aka space walk) support, and payload relocation
  • Gateway logistics for assembly, reconfiguration of modules, and visiting vehicles in support of the Artemis program
  • Environmental and operational risks to the Robotics system and Gateway. (E.g., Lunar dust, plasma, electrostatic discharge, antenna keep out zones)
  • Robotic interface requirements, their generation, verification, maintenance, processes, and flow to users and hosts
  • Providing systems engineering, integration advice and oversight for Gateway external robotics
  • Direct support to and representation of our Canadian Space Agency customer to promote successful integration of robotic systems onto the Gateway
  • Dynamic negotiation and problem solving with Gateway Partners (international and domestic), NASA, and their contractors

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in either Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or Applied Mathematics
  • Two or more years of post-graduate professional experience in a similar position is preferred
  • Knowledge of robotic systems and ISS robotic operations is an asset

All candidates must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and be able to receive access to government facilities
