Desert Research Institute (DRI) is seeking a dedicated individual to fill a full-time position as the Nevada Robotics STEM Trainer & Curriculum Specialist. This position will work with the robotics team to create integrated robotics lessons and deliver professional development training focused on ELA, math, and computer science using classroom-based robots and drones. This trainer will plan and lead professional development workshops across Nevada focused on robotics and engineering for current teachers, future teachers at Nevada’s higher education institutions, for staff from afterschool programs, and PreK - 12 educators, with an immediate focus on PreK-5th. This educator will assist with designing lessons and activities that are relevant and accessible for diverse populations focusing on engineering, computer science, literacy, math, and science for PreK – 12th grades. In addition to robotics training, this person will lead drone teacher trainings and provide aerial drone competition support across the state. This position is based in Reno, NV and requires mid-week statewide travel to locations such as Elko, Las Vegas, Ely, Mesquite, and other rural communities. This position requires both in-person and remote work with flexible working hours, with 50% of the week at the DRI campus in Reno. In addition to curriculum development and training, this person will assist with supporting classrooms during the day, family STEM events afterschool, and can expect to work 1-2 Saturdays per month, on average.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in education, science, STEM, or related field an accredited institution.
  • Current and valid teaching license in any grades, PreK – 12.
  • 5 years of classroom experience teaching PreK – college in STEM fields, robotics, drones, computer science, or related field.
  • 5 years of curriculum development experience with PreK – college educational or related STEM content.
  • 2 years of experience mentoring educators as an instructional coach, professional development provider, or related mentoring experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of Nevada content standards including computer science, math, ELA, science, and engineering for PreK – 8.
  • Certifications on the VEX robotics platforms including VEX 123 and VEX Go.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite programs, Canva, and Google Suite.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, conflict management, and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with CoDrone and REC aerial drone competitions
  • 10+ years of related Pre-K - college teaching experience

Conditions of Employment:

  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
  • Ability to travel for fieldwork, meetings, conferences, and workshops.
  • Statewide and mid-week travel required.
  • Work is flexible with some remote, on-campus, offsite locations, and some weekend work required. This position is expected to work on the Reno DRI campus at least 50% of the week.
  • Stable internet connection required for remote work
  • This position may require the ability to perform physical tasks, such as moving or lifting objects up to 60 lbs., and occasional stooping, bending, and kneeling. Standing and teaching for long periods of time exceeding 8 hours at times.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid US driver’s license.
  • This position requires occasional driving to off campus events.

Compensation and Benefits

The minimum annual starting salary is $79,597 and is competitive and commensurate with education, experience, and aligns with similar public academic research institutions. DRI offers a benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance; including 17.5% retirement match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 12 paid holidays, educational benefits, and the choice of two health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts. Additionally, there is no state income tax and no social security deduction.
