As an Interdisciplinary Biologist/Hydrologist within the Ecosystems Mission Area, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Conducts analyses and examinations on a variety of topics relating to toxic substances hydrology and develops background and briefing papers on issues and emerging problems related to national goals and objectives.
  • Provides timely and comprehensive information, options, and alternatives that facilitate decision-making on major budget, policy, legislative, and technical issues.
  • Provides analysis and development of data, information, narrative explanations, and justifications to provide clear and concise presentation, scientific interpretation, and clear justification of activities related to research or related to environmental contaminant and pathogen exposures.
  • Works with the Environmental Health Program (EHP) Coordinator to develop and implement a strategic direction for the toxic substances hydrology research portfolio in the EMA to support research on the toxicity and effects of environmental contaminant and pathogen exposure to address interdisciplinary goals and objectives outlined in the USGS Strategic Science Plans.
  • Coordinates with Regions and Centers to recommend changes that affect priority and funding for the toxic substances hydrology research portfolio.
  • The Toxic Substances Hydrology (TSH) Manager serves as a technical authority and primary staff member responsible at the national level for coordinating and/or executing research policies, plans, and programs related to contaminant biology.
  • Maintains liaison and working relationships with other USGS centers, regions, programs, mission areas, Department of Interior and other Federal agencies, states, and other working groups on contaminant biology.
  • Operates a government owned/leased vehicle as an incidental driver.

Qualifications

UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION : A year of undergraduate education is 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours or the equivalent of college study. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent was a prerequisite.

GRADUATE EDUCATION : In the absence of specific graduate program information, a year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours of graduate level college course work, or the number of credit hours the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full time study. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

BIOLOGIST GS-0401 BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT : Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

  • Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.*OR*B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. HYDROLOGIST GS-1315 BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT : Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics.**OR
  • A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level. Examples of GS-13 level work may include: 1) developing, coordinating, and/or executing research activities, policies, plans, or programs to support organization goals; 2) reviewing and evaluating the merits of proposed research and makes recommendations on proposed research and various priorities; 3) coordinating complex research activities; and 4) developing and applying advanced analytical methods, field investigations, laboratory studies, and modeling capabilities to understand sources, movement, and exposure pathways of chemical and microbial contaminants in the environment. For examples 1-4, the work provided wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
