The Mission

Start Date: ASAP

Munich-based OroraTech is developing a constellation of nano-satellites with thermal infrared cameras for automated wildfire detection and monitoring, post-event damage analysis, and various other applications. The new constellation will significantly reduce the detection time of wildfires and allow their near-real-time monitoring, thus empowering first responders, government, and insurance clients and decreasing the chances of megafires developing. OroraTech is developing the first global wildfire intelligence service, which includes early detection, real-time monitoring, risk assessment, and damage analysis capabilities. You will be joining a very dedicated and highly enthusiastic team of experts in the fields of remote sensing, optics, electronics, spacecraft, and software engineering.

What You’ll Be Doing

One of the key components of the wildfire service is the detection of vegetation scars left as an aftermath of wildfires, also known as “burnt areas”' You will work on creating a training dataset that will be used to train a machine learning model aimed at detecting burnt areas.

As An Image Analyst, You Will

  • Create an Earth Observation dataset that will be used to develop an AI to identify patches of burnt ground (aka burnt areas) in satellite imagery using a semi-automatic mapping approach.
  • Participate in designing and defining the dataset.
  • Visualize and annotate satellite imagery using an AI-assisted image annotation solution.
  • Digitize the perimeter of burnt areas identified in satellite imagery.
  • Be part of the team and work closely together with experienced data engineers and data scientists.
  • Have the opportunity to develop the next breakthrough AI model that helps combat wildfires with OroraTech.

Relevant Skills

  • Shown practical experience in working with satellite imagery before (acquired at prior jobs, internships, personal projects, university projects, open-source projects, academia/research, etc.).
  • Basic understanding of geospatial data and GIS (for example QGIS, ArcGIS).
  • Interest in satellites, remote sensing, machine learning, and AI.
  • You are proactive, structured, and like to bring in your own ideas.
  • You can acquire new skills independently.
  • Fluent English skills.
  • Coding skills in Python is a plus.
