VITO is a Flemish independent research organization in the field of cleantech and sustainable development. Our goal? To accelerate the transition to a sustainable world.

As geological interpreter and modeller, you contribute to the development of 3D geological models. You interpret geophysical data, including seismic and borehole data, translate it into 3D geological concepts and create 3D gridded geostatistical models.

These models are developed on both a regional and local scale. For the Flemish government you contribute to the development of the G3D/H3D model, the (hydro)geological reference model for Flanders. On a local scale, the models are applied, among other things, for geothermal projects or other geological applications.

Job description

• You understand and interpret geological (boreholes and outcrops), geophysical (seismic, gravity and resistivity) and geotechnical (cone penetration tests) data.
• You create acoustic velocity models to convert seismic data to depth domain.
• You interpolate the interpreted data into 3D horizon and fault models, using geological concepts based on literature and own research.
• You create 3D gridded models, including the distribution of petrophysical properties.
• You report model results, analysis and interpretations to customers, stakeholders and the scientific community.
• You work in close cooperation with fellow geo analysts and 3D-modellers and the interdisciplinary geothermal energy team at VITO.
• You stay updated with the latest techniques and software in geological modelling.
• You document and share novel insights in scientific publications.

Job requirements

• You have a master’s or PhD degree in geology, mining or geophysics.
• You are proficient in 3D modelling software using commercial packages as GOCAD, or Petrel as well as open-source Python based approaches.
• You are familiar with GIS (QGIS, ArcGIS) as visualisation and analysis tool.
• You have good communication skills and are a team player.
• You have strong analytical skills, are critical, but open minded.
• You are fluent in English, both verbally and in writing. Fluent in Dutch is a plus.
